The Future of Vespa in Canada

vespa_posterAs many of you scooter enthusiasts may know, Piaggo ended its distribution agreement in Canada with Canadian Scooter Corporation. Many riders are concerned about what this means for warranty, parts, service, etc.
In the letter below, Paolo Timoni, President and CEO, Piaggio Group Americas Inc. responds:

Thank you for your email and for the opportunity to share a quick update regarding Piaggio Group presence in Canada. As we announced on November 10th, see attached press release at the bottom of this email, we are very committed to the Canadian market and are planning for a long term presence in the market. Following the termination of our distribution agreement with Canadian Scooter Corp., we are currently in the process of setting up new business operations to provide the highest level of service to our Canadian customers. We are very happy with our progress so far. Currently we are already supporting Canadian retailers of Piaggio Group products by fulfilling their warranty claims for standard manufacturer warranty and their spare parts orders. We anticipate that by end of February we will have a dealer network in place with executed dealer agreements with Piaggio Group Americas and will be able to resume normal business operations.

The majority of Canadian retailers involved in Piaggio Group products, have already reached out to us and have warmly welcomed our direct entrance in the Canadian market. I believe Canadian customers of Piaggio Group products, and Vespa in particular, have no reason to be concerned: they own products of the highest quality, that retain a high second hand value, and that will continue to benefit from a high-level of customer service. With regard to your specific questions, following are some preliminary observation:

- Extended warranty: this is a product that was developed and retailed by CSC (see form attached we received from a Canadian retailer). At this point CSC is still an ongoing business and we have no reasons to doubt that they will continue to meet their legal obligations. In any case we will continue to monitor the situation.

- Small dealers: we believe small and large dealers are very important for a sound distribution network. Despite the challenging economic situation, most dealers are coping reasonably well and we have observe only a few cases of dealers forced to close their operations because of financial reasons. We anticipate that by end of February we will have a network of authorized dealers in Canada appointed by PGA that will include both small and large dealers. In selecting the new network of authorized dealers we will consider all applications from dealers that have been retailing Piaggio Group products in Canada in the past.

- Spare parts: since last week we have resume shipments of spare parts for all dealers in good standing that are placing orders with PGA. Service levels to Canadian customers should resume very quickly.

- Buying a Vespa: I believe that today as in the past buying a Vespa is a great decision for any consumer interested in scooters and I do not see any reason why a purchase decision should be postponed. All standard manufacturer warranties will be honored by PGA and service levels will be insured.

- Toronto show: unfortunately this year we will not be able to participate as we have decided to focus our resources on other priorities, mainly supporting dealers and customers.

(Piaggio Italy), the builder of such leading scooters and motorcycles as Piaggio, Vespa, Aprilia, Moto Guzzi, and Derbi, announces that it has terminated its exclusive distribution agreement with Canadian Scooter Corporation (CSC). The company is preparing to launch new business operations in the Canadian market allowing dealers to enjoy a direct relationship with a company of the Piaggio Group. Confirming Piaggio Group’s commitment to the Canadian market, Piaggio Italy has called upon Piaggio Group Americas, Inc. (PGA), to develop and support a Canadian dealer network equipped to increase market share and provide the finest product support in the industry. PGA announces that, effective immediately, it is inviting all dealers who had an executed dealer agreement with CSC in effect on October 5, 2020 (Former CSC Dealers) to submit warranty claims and new warranty registrations to PGA. Interested dealers should submit the latest version of their executed agreement with CSC, along with the Dealer Principal’s name, contact number and email address, either: (i) by fax to the attention of the PGA Finance Department at the following fax number: (212) 380-4459, or (ii) by overnight courier to: Finance Department, Piaggio Group Americas, Inc., 140 E 45th Street, Suite 17, New York, New York, 10017-3144. Any dealer with questions regarding the submission of this information (only) should contact Adrian Mendoza, either by email at: amendoza@piaggiogroupusa.com, or by telephone at: (212) 380-4428. Dealers who respond promptly to this invitation with the requested information will receive, within a matter of days, detailed instructions on how to submit parts orders, warranty registrations and warranty claims for processing and reimbursement on a going-forward basis. The claims and registration processes are likely to evolve over the next few months as computer systems are developed to handle requests from Canada. For customer care related issues (only), until a new Canadian Customer Care system is fully in place, PGA asks dealers and customers to contact PGA via email at: CanadaCare@piaggiogroupusa.com. PGA requests the patience and understanding of French-speaking dealers and customers as French language support is developed and put in place. Any Former CSC Dealer who wishes to be considered for appointment as a dealer in the new dealer network should send a letter expressing their interest, along with a copy of the latest version of their executed agreement with CSC and the contact information of the Dealer Principal (unless that information has already been provided), either: (i) by fax to the attention of Adrian Mendoza at the following fax number: (212) 380-4459, or (ii) by overnight courier to: Adrian Mendoza, Piaggio Group Americas, Inc., 140 E 45th Street, Suite 17, New York, New York, 10017-3144. PGA anticipates that new dealer agreements will be offered to select dealers in Canada no later than January 2010, and that a fully operational Canadian sales and service system for vehicles, accessories, and parts will be in place in February 2010. To kick-start the new sales season, a meeting is currently being planned for January 2010 to present the newly launched dealer network with 2010 sales programs.
