“What’sa KYMCO?” you may ask. In Scooter Underground’s opinion, KYMCO (Kwang Yang Motor Company, Ltd) is one of the greatest manufacturers of two wheeled vehicles that you have probably never heard of. KYMCO is a Taiwanese manufacturer of motorcycles and scooters. (When it comes to quality scooters, Taiwan is at the top of the heap – do not confuse Taiwan with China!)

Founded in 1963, KYMCO first manufactured engines and complete small bikes under license for Honda for 30 years before creating their own brand of scooters and motorcycles. KYMCO is the world’s 5th largest manufacturer of scooters and motorcycles. Long a leader in quality, fuel economy, and versatility, today KYMCO manufactures motor scooters, motorcycles, and ATVs at five plants in Asia, including the main facility in the city of Kaohsiung.

KYMCO is the largest scooter manufacturer in Taiwan (no small feat), and currently exports to 88 countries worldwide. All KYMCO plants use the latest technology for the engineering and production of reliable engine, chassis, and other components. BMW Taps KYMCO

BMW’s forthcoming G 450 X enduro is powered by an engine sourced from Taiwan’s Kwang Yang Motor Co. Ltd. (KYMCO).

Although developed by BMW, the 449cc single-cylinder DOHC four-stroke engine powering the model is manufactured by KYMCO in Kaoshiung, Taiwan, then shipped to BMW’s motorcycle production facility in Berlin.

“We and our partners developed a dedicated production line for this product that will deliver all of the processes and strict quality controls that have come to be expected from BMW,” explains Peter Müller, EVP Development and Model Lines, BMW Motorrad.

BMW formally unveiled the G 450 X to the world in November 2007 at the EICMA show in Milan. The company spent much of 2007 testing and refining the unit at select European enduros, and plans to enter the bike in the 2008 World Enduro Championship. U.S. launch plans have not been finalized.
