Why is the Symba much cheaper in the US? $2,400? And in Canada it is over $3,000. It’s the same scooter. And the Canadian dollar is almost on par with the U.S.
I love the scooter…but will hold off until Sym Canada gets its pricing fixed.
There are a whole bunch of additional costs to bring a scooter into Canada. Since Transport Canada rules and US Department of Transport (DOT) rules are not harmonized, there are a bunch of additional tests and approvals that must be done to bring scooters into Canada. These tests sometimes result in minor modifications to the scooter being required. All of these costs must be factored in to the cost of the scooter and amortized over the estimated number of units the manufacturer will sell in Canada.
It would make a lot of sense to harmonize these two regulatory regimes. We want tough regulations so that only quality, reliable, safe products are imported. I think the US DOT wants the same thing. It sure would be nice if a scooter meeting US DOT standards could be imported into Canada with little incremental expense.
I also caution you about trying to buy a scooter in the USA and import it into Canada. This is a tremendous hassle and, if you are able to get it here, the hassle does not outweigh the savings.
